“IR” port on back of Cable box (Comcast)

One thing I miss is having extra ethernet ports to plug in my desktop computer and my Xbox When the Uverse technician came in, he installed a Motorola NVG modem that also has a built in wireless router. My dilemma is the fact that all of the ports are being taken up. I need at least 2 more ethernet ports free so I can hook up my Xbox my model doesn’t have built in wifi and my desktop computer as well. I told the technician this when he installed the system and he told me to go on ebay and buy 2 cheap splitters and split 2 TV boxes that are coming into the NVG It didn’t work out. He told be I should buy an ethernet switch. I had my Linksys WRT54G Version 6 router laying around at the time and realized that it had a built in ethernet switch. I want to get this to also function as another Wifi hotspot because I have an old PowerMac G4 downstairs that won’t connect to the NVG for some reason it says connection timeout. I am guessing that the wifi card in the system may be too old to connect to the modern NVG

I would like to hook it up so that I can watch one show and record another on a different channel but comcast’s website says the boxes they give dont do that. I use the entry-level DCX converter box feeding its signal to seven recorders, including four Panasonic, one Philips and two Magnavox recorders. High Definition recording is limited to DVRs provided by cable and satellite providers or a few third party equipment providers. Those products do not record to removable media DVDs.

Those products are discussed here: The DMR-EZ48 has a digital tuner that should record the non-scrambled analog and digital services directly from Comcast’s raw coax cable feed without use of a converter box.

He eventually came into possession of two PCs, a desktop that he used for school and a laptop that his son used for school – BUT he was setup to only get out to the Internet via one PC at a time. In other words, the ‘in use’ PC was connected to the Motorola dsl modem via an ethernet cable. When he wanted a PC to browse the internet he was constantly switching that ethernet cable – unplugging it from one PC and plugging it into the other PC. He lives in a two story house – and neither of the computers were in the same room, much less on the same floor.

So, he was using a foot ethernet cable to connect the PC ‘in use’ to the dsl modem. Eventually a time came when it became a battle of who was going to be able to get out to the Internet – i. In addition, he decided that he wanted to get a ROKU Netflix box so he could watch netflix movies via a Internet connection on his television. I decided to try and help him set up a wireless network in his home.

I didn’t figure it would be a lot different than the sort of network I have here. My ‘input’ to the outside world is via a Motorola cable modem supplied by Time Warner. While I was still at my own home, I configured his WRT54G router to the exact same settings as I had for my house – and to test it out, I switched my existing with this new one and everything still ran smoothly.

Additionally, I set up the wireless on his Dell laptop at my home so there would be no problem with it making connectivity to the Linksys wireless router when he got it to his home. Leaving everything ‘as is’ on his Motorola dsl modem I simply connected that Ethernet cable coming out of it from his PC into the ‘Internet’ ethernet connection on the back of the Linksys WRT54G router.

My first test was to see if the Dell laptop could get out to the Internet.

As long as you don’t mind tinkering, The Dude is a decent network utility that should be worth the download. As we’ll discuss in this tutorial, old wireless routers can be turned into access points APs ; they can help increase the Wi-Fi footprint even more.

Plus they might even help increase the performance of the First off, wireless routers contain an AP. In addition to the AP functionality, a wireless router provides the routing between clients and the Internet. This makes it possible for multiple computers to access one big network, the Internet. Secondly, routers have a DHCP server. This server gives each client an IP address, which is required for network connectivity.

Without the routing and DHCP features, a wireless router would simply be an AP; if a wireless router didn’t have an AP, it would just be a wired router. On most networks, only one router is needed. Then to extend the wireless coverage, APs can be plugged into the router or switches. These APs aren’t as “smart. Then if the old router is properly placed by running an Ethernet cable , it can nearly double the coverage area provided by the new router.

If you are not using HDMI, the next best possible connection is component video. Component Video is the only other way to utilize progressive scan video which will produce a flicker-free picture that is much smoother. S-Video will not allow for progressive scan video fromatting but it will give you a clearer picture than composite video. These connections keep the digital signal in its best form for the receiver to process. It may be necessary to connect using Component Video and Digital Audio outputs, depending on how your system is configured.
